While David waited interminably for the trial to begin in Phoenix, Alicia gritted her teeth, gathered the remaining shards of strength, and accepted the risk of opening herself to new friendships. A gruesome, incredible murder had marred her existence. Surely, knowing an accused killer could happen to a person only once in a lifetime, and the odds of it occurring again would be just impossible.

If Alicia had owned a reliable crystal ball, and been able to look into the future, she probably wouldn’t have believed what lay in store.

It started with a camping trip. Alicia and a few friends set up tents in a state park not far from San Francisco Bay and she took a walk to explore the scenery. People who enjoy nature are often friendly in a communal sort of way. A few campsites away, a tall man greeted her and they began chatting. His good looks, charm, courtesy, and relaxed demeanor set her at ease, and his infectious laughter was just what she needed. The friendship grew, and they agreed to meet again soon. Alicia looked forward to it, and followed up by joining the couple for a picnic and visiting them at their home.

Taylor, whose full name was Glenn Taylor Helzer, talked about his younger brother, Justin, and their high-school days in Martinez, near Concord, where Alicia lived. In fulfillment of his Mormon mission, he had traveled to Brazil. With ambitions to succeed in the field of high finance, he worked as a stockbroker. While Alicia listened, she snapped a photo of Keri holding a young boy. Keri wore a cleavage-revealing halter top and black scarf over her hips to cover a minuscule bikini bottom. Taylor knelt next to her, shirtless, grinning, his eyes hidden by sunglasses, and sporting the makings of a beard.

True to her ambitions, Keri eventually succeeded as a model. Using the name “Kerissa Fare,” she posed nude for Playboy magazine and was chosen as “Miss September 2000.”

Taylor’s future pursuits took a far different path after he and Keri broke up. Perhaps as an offshoot from his
